A bean bag floating in the pool – that's the image of a perfect summer. But not all bean bags are designed for water. Here's what you absolutely need to know before buying one.
Do all bean bags float?
No. Most standard bean bags sink or become waterlogged within minutes. For a bean bag to float and remain usable:
- The outer fabric must be 100% waterproof (not just water-repellent)
- The seams must be sealed or treated
- The filling must be designed not to absorb water
Materials that truly work in water
Treated 600D Oxford fabric is currently the industry standard for aquatic bean bags. It offers:
- Complete waterproofing against splashes and light immersion
- Resistance to chemicals (chlorine, salt)
- Fast drying (less than 2 hours in the sun)
Maintenance after pool use
To maximize your bean bag's lifespan:
- Rinse with clear water after each prolonged use in a chlorinated pool
- Allow to dry completely before storing
- Avoid leaving wet under a tarp (mold)
- Bring indoors during thunderstorms (lightning + water = danger)
Poolside vs. in the pool: what's the difference?
There's an important distinction:
- Poolside: supports wet swimsuits, splashes, ambient moisture. Almost all waterproof bean bags are suitable.
- In the pool: requires active buoyancy. The bean bag must be light enough and have a fabric that does not allow water to penetrate.
Our recommendation for the pool
The Osmoze bean bag is designed for both uses. Its waterproof 600D Oxford fabric allows it to float in the pool and resist daily splashes. Available with delivery across Canada.
Bonus tip: keep a dry spot indoors – the best summer memories often begin with an impromptu nap after a swim.
